Removals in Brixton
W & W Movers is a family-run removal company carrying out house and flat removals across Brixton, SW2 and SW9. Every full move starts with a free survey at your home or by video, followed by a written quote. As a guide, removals cost from about £300 for a studio to £2,500 for a four-bedroom house, plus 20% VAT. Smaller jobs are charged by the hour, from £80 plus VAT for a two-person team with a Luton van. We have been moving London homes since 2015 and work seven days a week. Our services also include packing, storage and furniture dismantling.
Our Brixton work covers conversions off Brixton Hill and Acre Lane, estate blocks around Angell Town and Loughborough Junction, and family houses towards Herne Hill, Tulse Hill and Streatham. Before we quote, the survey answers three local questions. Is your street inside a Lambeth CPZ? Is the road outside a red route? Which end of the street can the vehicle enter? Read how our house removals work or call 020 3282 1582.

Divided Victorian Houses: Front Steps, Shared Halls and Mansard Floors
In a Brixton conversion, the route from your front door to the pavement sets the size of the removal team more than the number of rooms does. Lambeth’s conservation statement for Brixton Road records that almost all of its 19th-century villas were divided into flats. The same road has Georgian terraces from the 1820s, such as Minerva Terrace, many of them Grade II listed. A typical house has a raised ground floor up a flight of front steps and a semi-basement below. On many terraces, a mansard storey was later added to the roof.
Each of those levels adds its own work to a removal. From a raised ground floor, every box goes down the front steps, so the vehicle has to stop as close to the gate as the street allows. Upper floors share the front door and staircase, so tell your neighbours the date and clear bikes and buggies out of the hall the evening before; an empty hall makes the carry easy and safe. Mansard rooms can have low doorways and a tight last flight. We measure both. A semi-basement may have its own door under the steps, and the survey checks whether a sofa can leave that way or has to come up through the building.
Furniture designed to come apart, such as beds, wardrobes and tables, is dismantled in the room and rebuilt at the new address by our dismantling and reassembly service. Often that is the only way past a narrow turn. Fitted wardrobes and built-in shelving stay where they are, because our terms exclude them. An upright or grand piano needs specialist expertise as well as dedicated trolleys and ramps, so mention it at the survey and see moving a piano. On a video survey, start filming at the front gate and keep going to your door, so we can review every step, landing and turn.

Estate Blocks and Towers: Lifts, Walkways and the Housing Office
Estate homes bring their own access rules to removals. Brixton has several large estates, from the Cowley Estate, built between 1934 and 1936, to Angell Town, Stockwell Park and the Loughborough Estate. Southwyck House on the Somerleyton Estate, known locally as the Barrier Block, went up between 1972 and 1981 and has 176 homes.
For removals from these blocks, two things shape the job: the size of the lift and the distance between the vehicle and the entrance. Estate roads, barriers and parking areas are often managed by the housing office or a tenant management organisation. Ask them before the survey:
- Can a Luton drive onto the estate for removals, and where may it stop?
- Which lift can our team use, and what are the inside measurements of the car and the door?
- Is there an entrance closer to your block?
- Who should we call if the lift stops working?
Provide the answers, or photos of the lift and the entrance, and we will plan the start time and the crew around them. Tall wardrobes come apart to fit a small lift car. Anything that still does not fit goes down the stairs, which is slower, so we price it in from the start. A long walk along estate walkways or across a courtyard adds time too, so tell us roughly how far it is.
Lambeth Parking Suspensions: Notice, Fees and Registrations
Lambeth suspends parking bays only inside its controlled parking zones (CPZs), and a standard application needs at least 10 working days’ notice. On the council’s 2026/27 charges, each space costs £57.55 a day plus an admin fee of £98.83. A Luton with room to work at the back doors usually needs two spaces. That makes £213.93. Applying 6 to 9 working days ahead adds £68.77, and applying 2 to 5 ahead adds £156.31. The council does not guarantee short-notice suspensions, so plan the relocation three to four weeks ahead.
Four Lambeth rules often catch customers out:
- Every vehicle using the suspension must be listed in the online account, or it can get a penalty charge notice or be removed.
- Warning signs go up about three days before the start, but the council cannot guarantee that the space will be empty.
- An approved suspension cannot be changed, so a new date or length counts as a new application, with every fee and notice period again.
- Each road needs its own application, so a corner property has to choose one street before applying.
These rules apply to all Lambeth removals. Brixton streets outside the CPZs have nothing to suspend, and the Luton parks wherever the street’s own restrictions allow. Single yellow lines in Lambeth are controlled from 8.30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, unless a time plate shows other hours. Double yellow lines apply at all times. A quick look at the signs at the end of your street shows whether it is in a CPZ.
Arranging parking for your move is your responsibility. If you ask when you confirm the date, we will send the application to Lambeth for you, and you pay the council’s fee. If you would rather apply yourself, we provide our vehicle registrations for the account. We never leave a vehicle where it may not stop, and any fine caused by parking that nobody arranged is paid by the customer. Our step-by-step guide to bay suspensions covers the process.

Red Routes and Traffic Filters Around Brixton
Two sets of road rules shape removals: Brixton Road and Brixton Hill form part of the A23, a red route run by Transport for London, and the side streets include several low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs). Together they decide where a removal vehicle can stop and which way it arrives.
On a red route, double red lines mean no stopping at any time. Single red lines allow stopping only during the hours on the nearby sign, and vehicles may stop only in marked bays where the signs allow it. If your front door opens onto Brixton Road or Brixton Hill, the van usually works from a side street, a dedicated loading bay or a suspended space round the corner. That longer carry goes into the quote. Transport for London controls about 37 km of red routes in Lambeth, so if you are unsure about your address, ask us to check it.
LTN filters close some streets to through traffic, and only pedestrians and cyclists can pass them. Residents, visitors and deliveries can still reach every street by vehicle, but only from the open side. Lambeth has run LTNs around Brixton for several years. It made the Railton LTN, between central Brixton and Herne Hill, and the Oval to Stockwell LTN permanent in December 2021. The Brixton Hill LTN followed on 10 February 2025, with motor vehicle bans on parts of Lyham Road, New Park Road, Dumbarton Road, Branksome Road and other streets. Drivers who pass through a filter are fined. That is why our team plans the approach and the exit before moving day instead of trusting a satnav on the morning. Send us both full postcodes and we will check each end.
What a Brixton Removal Costs, Council Fees Included
A Brixton removal costs the price of the move plus 20% VAT, plus any council fee for parking. The table shows how the bill builds up for a two-bed flat on a raised ground floor off Brixton Hill, moving within Lambeth with standard notice:
| Item | Amount | Who charges it |
|---|---|---|
| Removal itself, with transport and basic goods in transit cover | £450–£900 + VAT, set at the survey | W & W |
| Lambeth suspension at the collection address, 2 spaces for 1 day | £213.93 | Lambeth Council |
| Suspension at the delivery address | Depends on the street | The council for that street |
| Full packing service, if needed | Quoted after the survey | W & W |
| Storage service between homes, if needed | Quoted on volume and dates | W & W |
For other sizes of house removals, Brixton prices follow the same guide: £300–£600 for a studio or one-bed, £800–£1,500 for a three-bed house and £1,200–£2,500 for four or more bedrooms, all plus VAT. Brixton sits outside the Congestion Charge zone, so a local move does not pay it. If your new home is inside it, the £18 daily charge is a separate line on the quote. We take payment before the removal starts, in cash, by bank transfer or through PayPal. For a quick first figure, try our removal cost calculator.

Between Tenancies: Storage When Move-Out and Move-In Dates Differ
If your tenancy ends before the next one starts, we can move your belongings from Brixton into our own store in NW10, keep them there and deliver them when you get the new keys. Containers hold around 250 cubic feet each, and the store is secure, with CCTV around the clock. Our man and van team handles the collection and the redelivery. Storage can last a week or many months.
In a furnished let, the landlord’s furniture stays behind. Put a sticker on anything that is not yours and walk round with the team at the start. When your things are going to two places, mark what goes to storage and what goes to the new home; clear labels make it easy to load in the right order. NW10 is in north-west London, across the river, so the drive to the store is part of the plan for the collection. One quote covers both the move and the storage service, and storage prices depend on volume and dates. See storage with collection and redelivery.
Packing usually takes longer than people expect, so start with the rooms you use least. If you would rather hand it over, our professional packing services cover the whole home, using our own materials. Read more about full packing.
Smaller Removals: Brixton Moves by the Hour
A studio, a room in a flat share or a few pieces of furniture rarely need a survey-based removal, because our hourly service matches the team to the size of the job. Two movers cost £80 per hour plus VAT with a three-hour minimum, and three movers cost £100 per hour plus VAT with a four-hour minimum. The day rate is £600 plus VAT for two or £750 plus VAT for three. After the minimum, time is charged in 30-minute steps. On our South London removals page we estimate two to three hours for a studio or one-bed in Brixton. A full relocation of a family home, by contrast, gets a survey and a fixed quote.
The Luton’s load space measures 4.0 by 2.2 by 2.2 metres and takes up to 1,100 kg, enough for most homes of up to two bedrooms. We provide blankets, trolleys and straps to secure everything in transit. For a job that finishes by midday, Lambeth also offers a half-day suspension, from midnight to midday, at £34.57 per space plus the admin fee. Same-day work depends on availability. All rates are on our price list, and the man and van page explains what an hourly job includes.
Tell us the address, the floor, whether there are front steps or a lift, and your preferred date, and we will arrange a survey at home or by video, then send a written removal quote. To book, call 020 3282 1582 or use our enquiry form. Cover limits are on the insurance summary. For studios and shops, see office moves. A move north of the river is covered under removals in central London, and Putney, Richmond or Kingston under South West London removals.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Our Removals in Brixton
Start with reviews. Independent platforms such as Google and Checkatrade show how a firm treats its customers, and we are rated 5.0 on Google and listed as a Checkatrade member. Then ask for a written quote that lists every extra, along with the company's terms and insurance limits. Check which additional services the firm provides itself, such as packing, furniture dismantling and storage. Finally, see whether the service can scale from a few hours with two movers to a full house with several vehicles.
No. We do not offer rubbish removal or house clearance, so deal with unwanted items before moving day. Lambeth works with the charity Emmaus on a free collection of furniture in good, reusable condition, and runs a paid bulky waste collection for things that cannot be reused. Arrange either one early, so the items have gone before our team arrives.
Goods in transit are covered up to £25,000 per vehicle, with a £250 excess on each claim, settled on an indemnity basis rather than new for old. Every move also carries public liability insurance. Glass and china you pack yourself are covered only to £100, and the contents of drawers and wardrobes we did not pack are not covered. Electrical or mechanical faults in electronics without visible damage are excluded. Jewellery, watches, cash, documents and plants cannot travel with us. The insurance summary on our site lists every limit.
Yes. Office removals and other business relocations run in the evening or at weekends at a premium rate, so you lose as little of the working week as possible. Our crew takes desks apart and rebuilds them. A studio with a few desks often suits the hourly service, while a larger office gets a site visit and a quote. Shops around Brixton Market can move the same way, outside trading hours.
Yes. We plan longer removals, from Brixton to central London or to the rest of the UK, in the same way as local ones. A home north of the river in the centre may also mean the Congestion Charge and another council's parking rules. For Putney, Richmond or Kingston, see our South West London removals. Wherever the relocation ends, the suspension at the delivery address is arranged with the council for that street.

Brixton SW2 and SW9: Windrush Square, Brixton Market and Brockwell Park
Brixton centres on Windrush Square, in front of the Brixton Tate Library, named in 1998 to mark 50 years since the arrival of the Empire Windrush. Brixton Market spreads through Electric Avenue, Brixton Village and Market Row nearby. Brixton tube station, the southern end of the Victoria line since 1971, stands about 100 metres from the rail station served by Southeastern. Brixton Road and Brixton Hill carry the A23 south past Lambeth Town Hall at the corner of Acre Lane. Off Brixton Hill, in Blenheim Gardens, stands Ashby’s Mill, a Grade II* listed windmill built in 1816. Brockwell Park marks the southern edge, towards Herne Hill, and Stockwell lies to the north.
Georgian terraces, divided houses, 1930s and post-war estates and new blocks can share one postcode here, which is why we survey every home before quoting for removals. Brixton moves within SW2 and SW9, across London or further all start with the same free survey.
